Smart Newspaper Design

If you do any sort of newspaper design at all, then you need to have this site bookmarked. It was a flash presentation created by the Poynter Institute. It’s very well done, and provides a LOT of useful information about smart design in general.

Inappropriate story graphic of the week

In what’s becoming a nearly frequent problem at the BBC, they can’t seem to figure out an appropriate graphic for stories. For example, since when did cheese signify the condition the ‘net was in? Link from NTK.

AT&T Offers Instant Messaging

I’m really glad that Brian at bbspot.com decided to quit his day job and run the site full time, as he’s putting out some great content (and remember, folks, this site is SATIRICAL…if you don’t have a sense of humor, go away).

A great one from the last week, AT&T Offers Instant Messaging. Granted, it wasn’t written by Brian, but still funny as heck. From the article:

In Larsen’s demonstration, he explained that each user is given a unique phone id or “number”. This is fairly standard in the IM world. This number can then be keyed into a telephone to initiate contact with another user. What’s revolutionary about AT&T’s TIM application, according to Larsen, is that the users will not be limited to communicating by typing. The user’s voice is “streamed” over the telephone line in “real-time.”

Arial or Helvetica?

OK, you typography geeks out there will apprciate this. We all know that Helvetica has been around for a long time and is very popular, and Microsoft ripped it when they created Windows and called it Arial. The inferior typeface is now installed all over.

But can you tell the difference between Arial and Helvetica? It’s not easy, that’s for sure. I got 6 out of 10, and I know how to look at this kind of stuff. If you want a really in-depth article about the differences between the two typefaces, read this article. Just don’t read it until after you’ve already tried it.

” I wanted to keep all the stuff we’d had sex on.”

From Ruminate.com:

While redecorating, I realized my wife and I have drastically different tastes in furniture. She wanted to keep only the pieces that reflected the French provincial theme she was creating; I wanted to keep all the stuff we’d had sex on.

National Geographic does a swimsuit issue

Their site probably won’t work until Saturday, but what does it say about society when they are doing a swimsuit issue? Actually, in reality, the issue, while it will have a sultry lady on the cover, will feature swim suits and how they’ve evolved over the years. Will it outsell the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue that hits stands this month? Doubtful, but it will be interesting to see the traditional yellow-bordered magazine with a scantily-clad woman on the cover.

Rent Chris Pirillo’s Chest

This is odd, yet funny at the same time. Chris Pirillo, founder of Lockergnome is taking offers on his chest. For $20, he’ll write your note on his pecs with a black, purple, brown, green, red, or blue marker, and then give you a high-res pic to keep. You thinking I’m kidding, don’t you?

FreeRealty project looking for developers

If you know PHP and MySQL, and have way too much time on your hands, the FreeRealty project could always use your help. It’s a project that I helped to start and develop, and it’s the software that powers the back-end of Sunray’s web site. It’s a fork from the 2.6 version of OpenRealty that is no longer in development and we’re trying to revive the project, fixing bugs, adding features, etc.. . So if you know a thing or two, join us!

Gregg’s Case Mod

Ok, here’s the 100% completed case modification.

enter the beast

I have an Antec SLK2600AMB, but I wish I’d gone with a mid-tower.

FrozenCPU.com didn’t ship a gasket with my window kit, so I have a big gaping hole with moderately sharp metal edges right now. But they did send one, which should be here in a couple days. They were skeptical, but happy to send another, and their shipping time is excellent.

Final decision on case mod: Next time I’ll buy a pre-windowed case.
