Auto Patching Windows

I actually saw this mentioned in my last Maximum PC magazine, and wanted to mention it here, mostly for bookmark purposes.

Autopatcher is an all-in-one updater for Windows 2000, XP, and 2003. If you're sick of going to Windows Update all the time, this includes every patch and update from Windows Update as well as a pile of registry tweaks, add on software, and other cool stuff. I just plan on burning this to a CD to bring to when I do a service call, and call it good.

The same group also has an Autostreamer, which gives you a slick interface to slipstream and create a new Windows installation CDs that are updated with the latest service pack. Dang cool.

Any advice for the less than computer savvy? I update fairly regularly--that and my puter is set up to check for windows/office xp updates automatically. Is this program a redundancy or a must have?

Hey Cheryl!

First off, welcome to my site :-). Secondly, this program is a bit for the more computer savvy among us, as it does require you to burn the thing to a CD and run it from that (if I read it correctly). The thing that is nice, though, as it does make some registry tweaks and install some patches that are quite on Windows Update yet (as Microsoft always puts the files on their servers a day or two or 10 before they upload them to Windows Update). But if you're having your system patched automatically, you should probably be OK. This is primarily for somebody like me who works on other folks' computers and doesn't always have broadband around to patch things :-)
