Update on 9/4/08 @ 4PM: Comments are borked. They're going through, so please don't comment twice, but they're just spitting out ugly errors and not rebuilding the pages to show your comment. You Knew It Had To Happen: The Bend Pregnant Man T-Shirt

"Bend Oregon: Home of the Pregnant Man" T-shirt:

bendpregnantman-tshirt.jpg

The t-shirts are being done by Flash Ink, a local screen printing company. They're going to go on sale on Wednesday, are $15, and are available by calling (541) 408-1308 or via email at rogerprints {at} yahoo {dot} com (they don't have a retail shop or Web site yet -- they're working on it). Mention that you saw the shirt here.

And if you haven't heard of the pregnant "man", read on here and here. I haven't really been following the story (because, really, in my opinion, it's not a story), but the discussion on those two posts have been interesting.

Update: I've also been told they'll be selling them at Lucky's Tattoo and Body Piercing (by Red Carpet).

Ugh! Who would wear one of these T-shirts? As "diverse" as Bend has beccome, it seems that this is just a bit over the top. Not just the fact that the couple has decided to have a baby, but that it is news. I wonder how much they are selling this story for? I predict that this couple will soon move out of Oregon.

I agree with Kitty Tye that they will probably move, at least out of Bend, if not the state. Like the "blue man" who made the rounds of the morning network shows and, yes, Oprah a couple months back... he said in an interview that Bend just wasn't tolerant and people stared at him... Hello, he's blue, by choice! Apparently LA is more in line with his unique choice of skin colors.

Kitty Tye said on 04/07/08 @ 06:36 PM:
I am all for diversity and I think Bend is right up there at accepting all kinds. To purposely have blue skin and be mad at people for noticing is crazy to say the least -he would get mad if you didn't notice. The people with the baby probably DO want a baby, however they are exploiting the situation . . . It's all about money. So we have a pregnant female passing herself off as a pregnant male - and people (TV / Media) are paying for this stuff??? I'd say she/he/she is an opportunist.

Thomas is just another beautiful Cog in the wheel of diversity who is not asking permission from society at large to have a child. I am very glad that they went public and it is not surprising to me that they were not supported by the gay community.

His story just reaffirms my belief that transgendered is not an accurate word to describe people whose gender does not match thier sex. Bigendered is a better term to describe Thomas who is now showing a feminine gender by being physically pregnant.

Congrats to the Beatie family, I am proud of you.

You have misunderstood. It's not a gay or transgender bashing here. This is a woman, who desirese to be a man, gets pregnant, by whatever means and then exploits self by claiming to be a pregnant man. She is not a pregnant MAN, and this is not newsworthy. He may feel like a man; she has a woman's body. She is not a pregnant man. This is turn-of-the-century circus sideshow material. If they want to live a normal life, they should act "normal". To push this as a miracle, or freakish incident "a pregnant man" is just not real. These people are either publicity seekers or looking for easy money while sacraficing their private life.

i saw this couple on oprah, and they are a nice couple. i have a good sense of character. "so what"??? if this couple wish to have children, it is their constitutional right!!! people who are born with this kind of defect, did not ask to be born that way. and so she/he has every right to be able to have their own child, and i wish them all the joys & happiness they deserve!!!

Kitty Tye said on 06/01/08 @ 04:34 AM:
Yep, everyone deserves happiness. However that's not the story here. Exploitation to gain money under false pretense is the story. This is a WOMAN having a baby, not a MAN. This is not news, it's fraud. "A woman, posing as a man, claims miracle birth." HUH? This couple deserves happiness, however they are MARKETING their situation to make money. It's just ridiculous that anyone would think this deserves national media attention.

there are people who are born trans-gender, just as there are people born without legs, arms, etc. if you've ever watched ''A BABY STORY'' on TLC you know there are also babies born with both sexes. it can't be helped. that's nature. i was blessed to be born normal, & some are born female but feel as tho they are a male inside. i did not understand, but now i have been educated. so i wish them all the happiness in the world, & u should too!

BRENDA.... you aren't getting the point. This is not about transgender or being gay, this is about exploitation. They are exploiting this baby to make money, it's fraudulent. Being gay or transgender is ok. That is not the issue. You just don't get the point. It's not about their sexuality or partner preference, it's about class - and they don't have any.
