I guess the point of the article was to make fun of Dan Benjamin's instructions on how to build MySQL from source in OSX. Yes, sometimes you just need to build something from source... even in Ubuntu. Building from source is a pretty common operation when you're doing development on any Unixy platform, including OSX and Ubuntu. But if you don't *need* to build from source, even in OSX you can still use a package manager like MacPorts which turns this operation into a one line command -- heck there are even a couple of GUI's to make it all clicky clicky, if you're into that sort of thing.
