I'm Home
Made it home a few hours ago. The wedding was very nice (Emily, you and Stephen are going to make a wonderful husband and wife), and it was nice to see everybody there. I'm sitting here watching my 1200+ email messages download here, so I'll get through those tomorrow.
One last thought before I get to bed: Taking a vacation with kids (especially when they're 3 and 6 years of age) is not a vacation -- it's exhausting.

Got back totally exhausted and run down. Having said that, roller coasters in the rain rock!

Aaron - you're right, rode Millennium Force in the rain at Cedar Point a couple of years ago and it was something else.
Jesse Thompson said on 08/14/06 @ 11:34 AM: Well, one year we went to newport with Christian (this is before Jaydon was born of course :) and it was exhausting. Then the next year we went by ourselves and left Christian with his Grandmother for the weekend........ and it was no fun. I've found that a vacation isn't as enjoyable now when you can't see it through the eyes of your children. :)

The trick with traveling with kids is, I think, having absolutely no itinerary. Also, having a wide open space (say an Oregon beach) for them to run and scream at the top of their lungs to their hearts content.
I think the moment we take them into formal situations or scenarios—all bets are off. Or more likely, we the grownups are more worried about them suddenly finding themselves in the limelight (crawling under the brides’ gown during the ceremony thinking it’s a fort…). Us parent types get sorta uptight about these possibilities.
This being said, at the beach Hope was screaming her head off, making silly sound effects, splashing in the waves—and I had this moment of thinking—I should tell her to quiet down, she is going to disturb someone, when it occurred to me that if she can’t scream here, then where? So I shut up and went back to building perfect a seawall for our sand castle.
We let her set the pattern for a lot of the days planning. She wanted to ride the carousel and sit on the sea horse. She wanted to try an elephant ear. She wanted to have dinner with our neighbors. So be it. We worked in what we wanted to do as well and she was a perfect angel.
