Cramming For Kindergarten

My daughter is going to be starting kindergarten here in a few weeks (assuming the district transfer to Ensworth -- which is actually closer than the school whose district we're actually in -- goes through). I think she's more than prepared for kindergarten, but apparently some parents are worried and are getting private tutoring for their kids before they head off to school.

That's sad. Very sad. If your kid isn't ready, it's probably because you didn't interact with them enough growing up -- reading to them, playing games with them, turning off the TV, etc... . Doing last minute cramming isn't going to help them that much, it's just going to frustrate them.

my youngest will starting kindergarten this year, and I think he'll be just fine without tutoring. kids need to be kids.

This is such crap... kids (who have not been brought up in front of a TV) are a LOT brighter than most people realize and I totally agree that it's a very bad idea for a 5 year old to have to be tutored for anything.

Poor kids.

Over here you go to kindergarten when you're 3... my daughter started at the beginning of the year, and has really enjoyed it.

A niece of mine, who is 6, already has already been taught by her parents to read and write. This coming year she'll learn that in elementary school. I think it's great how motivated she is to learn things, and how devoted her parents are to helping her!

Additionally, I think privately tutoring a three-year-old is ridiculous. Has the kid already passed the age that the parents can teach him/her anything???

I'm so glad I don't have kids. Anything they do wrong, parents get blamed for... and anything they do right, the kid gets the credit for. :-/

In regards to Paul's comment - I have a friend that did that... taught her kid a lot at home, he was very smart. I thought it was great! -However, when the kid got to (public) school, he was bored to death cuz he already knew what the rest of the class was learning. He created all sorts of problems; talking, causing trouble with class mates, not listening...etc.
Side note: He's 20 now, and in jail.
