Politicos Want to Rename I-69

This reminds me of the folks in New Mexico that wanted to rename Route 666:

John Hostettler, the Congressman representing the 8th district of Indiana, has been convinced by local religious groups to introduce legislation in the House that would change the name of an Interstate 69 extension to a more moral sounding number.

There are plans to extend the interstate from Indianapolis through southwestern Indiana all the way through Texas into Mexico in the coming years. While most believe this highway will be good for the state's economy, religious conservatives believe "I-69" sounds too risqué and want to change the interstate's number.

Full Story.

Update on 11/17: OK, I'm an idiot and well behind on my Fark reading. This is all a hoax.

Why not just get rid of the number 69 altogether? If it's such a nasty number, we can do without, right? While we're at it, let's also get rid of 40 and 50. Too many people have bad experiences with those numbers. And I have a particular dislike of 93, so it has to go, as well.

Hey, here's an idea -- replace 69 with that old Roman numeral standby -- LXIX. Now it's morally correct. I can hear the school kids now: "... sixty-seven, sixty-eight, el-ex-i-ex, seventy ..." Oops! I don't think the Roman numeral idea will work. What word do you immediately think of when you see LXIX? Yep, LICKS!

That's the problem with attempting to legislate morality -- just when you think you've got it covered, you find another trap.

Sure, they say it was a hoax. But, I'll bet there's a smoking gun (er, memo) somewhere where some Conservative lawmaker has proposed just this sort of thing. It's plausible, after all. Right?

Anyway, it was fun while it lasted.
