20+ years ago, I lived on the coast of Florida just a bit north of where the hurricane eyed in. The highest point on that barrier island was 8 feet, and we hit fresh water at 4.5 feet--watered the lawn with it. Even if we'd dug a shallow hole in the yard, I hate to imagine all the roaches, snakes, spiders, scorpions, etc. that would have been flooded out of their homes and into that hole. Yuck.
