Great...Bend's going to be over run by old folks

As Barney at Bend.com reported, Bend was (again) named as one of five "best places to retire."

Man, I need to get out of here before we get more blind-as-a-bat geriatrics behind the wheel. We need mass transit here, and we need it now.

Ah yes, the transit debate. The never-ending Debate of Bend. With the central issue: Who's gonna PAY for transit here? And how much will it be used if the riders pay their full freight?

Jake Ortman said on 08/27/03 @ 09:10 AM:
Obviously the old folks won't pay full tab, but I have a feeling somebody will pitch in. You could do what they do in Eugene, where the school district and the college pay for part of it. All UO and Eugene students get free passes (Free, in a manner of speaking for UO folks -- it comes out of student fees). But the Eugene school district was able to cut bus routes, saving them some money that they could pass on to LTD.

LTD serves all of Lane County, so, something I'd like to see, is some sort of partnership with the city of Redmond and Deschutes County to serve Redmond and Bend, with trips now and again to Sunriver and/or Prinevillle to get commuters back and forth (as I know when I lived in Eugene, working in Salem, riding a bus back and forth was REALLY nice and worth the $50/month I paid for the seat).

My girlfriend heard from a Dial-A-Ride driver that they're going to try to have actual North-South (97) and East-West (newport->greenwood) routes by the end of the year. I'm not holding my breath, but I know I'd certainly use transit if it were available and reasonably priced.

I will VERY amazed if Dial-A-Ride EVER gets fixed routes. I'm not saying I would have a problem with it, but I'm just not holding my breath on it, either.

I'm in Great Bend, Kan. Where's Bend?

Jake Ortman said on 01/19/05 @ 12:16 PM:
It's in Central Oregon, Susan.

hi , yes that is my last name as well. I randomly ended up here but did see an article in the bulletin about you before. Anyway i agree with you that bend needs transit in the worst way but don't think it will happen. If people were clearer thinking, instead of a parking garage in dt bend, transit. West siders don't want to widen there roads, transit. Of course the westside voted for it , maybe justa bus system that runs over there. If towns like Hood River and Tillamook can have transit systems, why not Bend?
