Fellow Oregonians: Am I missing anything else here? Are there things that I'm missing that should definitely NEVER get mentioned on Oregon tourism brochures?
Neil T. said on 08/26/03 @ 10:55 AM: You yanks should keep quiet. Fuel here is typically $6 a litre.
Interesting fact - if oil was sold in Euros instead of US dollars, the US economy would collapse overnight.
Jake Ortman said on 08/26/03 @ 12:00 PM: Right, but in Europe, you have better quality gas. Diesel engines are good things over there, because you guys have much better quality Diesel gas. We may have the engines, but they break down because our gas sucks. But that's another debate, another time. If it were up to me, I'd have a Mercedes Turbo Diesel with European gas :-). Any car I can go 90 in, and still get 30mpg, I'm happy.
And I believe it about the economy collapse. I know I don't contribute a whole lot to the problem, as both of my cars get 35+ miles per gallon (my Honda gets 40 on the highway).
Jon said on 08/26/03 @ 03:58 PM: That is $1.94 for how much petrol? We are about to hit $AU1 per litre (but don't forget we produce a fair chunk of our own) and of that, about 70c is tax.
Jake Ortman said on 08/26/03 @ 04:10 PM: $1.94 for a gallon of it (approx 3.8 litres). I not so much bitching about the gas prices (as I know, compared to everywhere else in the globe, we have it easy), but the fact that Oregon gets screwed in so many ways.
Yes, we Americans suck gas like nobody's business, and I would LOVE to be able to use other modes of transportation, but unfortunately American society and development isn't as friendly to other modes of transportation or to mass transit. It sucks.
And I think the state gas tax on Oregon gas is right around $.24/gallon -- but I can't remember exactly, and that doesn't include any local taxes that may be applied.
Jon said on 08/26/03 @ 10:56 PM: Umatilla and the chemical depos there should never. Ever. Be mentioned.
Neil T. said on 08/27/03 @ 01:16 AM: Our Ford Focus Zetec 1.6i does 50 mpg on the highways :). Cars tend to be more efficient over here, as you can probably imagine.
Most of the cost of fuel is duty (money to the government) - it is deliberately expensive to encourage people to use alternative means of transport. Indeed, the extra money is supposed to help to fund improvements to public transport. That is, it is supposed to...
